Production

Mainstream films are films which are widely released in cinemas all over the world. Whereas independent films are not as well recognised. Considering production, mainstream films always have a well-known and award winning producers/directors, such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron etc. Another advantage with a mainstream film is that there are always famous and top actors who are for the filming, high amounts of money are paid to the actors to cast in the film. Also, most of the directors who make the mainstream films would probably have already made high grossing films, which is why they are able to make mainstream films in the first place, everyone had to start from being an independent film maker and pursue their way to the top.

Location is also a very important factor with mainstream films, they will mostly be set in iconic places, such as New York, London, Los Angeles and other well-known places. To be able to film in these locations, large budgets are needed, because it’s very expensive. It’s also a very long process to start filming, with things such as Risk Assessments, call lists involved.

Special effects is also something which only large budget firms can use professionally, which can sometimes cost up to million depending on what effects you’re using. Avatar so far is the most costly film when it comes to special effects. Advanced technology would require a large budget which mainstream films have.

Distribution

Mainstream films are always put into cinemas all over the world on the release date. With the money they have and will consume, they will be able to make their film worldwide and all over the cinemas and theatres all over the world.

Audience

Mainstream audience completely differs from independent films and they’re audience. Mainstreams audience will be millions of people once again all over the world, since mainstream films will be all over cinemas etc. there will be even more people watching them, and a few years after the film has come out, it will be released on TV and there

Horizontal integration is where a production company expands into the other areas of one industry, this means that the company can develop in a particular area of production or they can buy out another company that deals with these areas. Benefits of horizontal integration could be

• A more strengthened presence in the reference market
• This also helps them to engage in monopoly pricing (monopoly pricing is a strategy followed by a seller where the seller can maximize his or her profit without having to worry about any kind of competition.)

 

The drawbacks of horizontal integration are

• Decentralized structure could lead to a “loose ship”, as the team and projects leaders have high levels of responsibility for achieving results but little real authority over their team members.
• A resulting lack of control can lead to finger-pointing when things go awry, which can hinder productivity.

Vertical integration is when the production company has the ownership of the means of production, distribution and exhibition of the film by the same company, because of this they receive all of the profit. Benefits of this,

• There’s more control over the value chain. When retailers decide to acquire to develop a manufacturing business, they get more control over the production part of the distribution process.
• It enables you to invest in greatly specialized assets. This is great because there’s advantages that you could obtain over your competitors.

The draw backs of vertical integration

• It decreases flexibility. This is because of the downstream or upstream investments that the business will make.
• The capacity balancing problems, for instance the business, may need to establish excess upstream capacity in order to ensure that the downstream operations will have enough supply under any demand conditions.

Co operatives

The media cooperatives is a relatively new form of cooperative. They are a form of alternative media, critical of capitalism, with left-wing stances. Media Cooperatives are a special form of service cooperative, in which customers and service providers usually unite to oppose the pure profit motive. In contrast to mainstream media companies, media cooperatives pursue more idealistic goals.

Im going to be writing about the game sector, FIFA16 will be the game I will reviewing and researching on.

This game (FIFA16) is a newly made game which is made for any age in the world from above 3. Which tells us that it’s a very good game and even young ages such as 3 can learn to play. This is a association football simulation video game which was published by EA Sports for all consoles. It recently came out, on the 24^th of September. A new game mode has been included where you can now play with women and their international teams. This is a game which anyone can play and a lot of improvements have been made from the previous FIFA15.

The pros on the new FIFA is that this year the defense play is much more organised than last year. Which was one of the most complained about things in FIFA15. Also there’s more improved career modes, there’s a new draft mode on Ultimate team which makes all teams more accessible, and on top of all of that there’s a fantastic match-day atmosphere. Now that it’s on next gen consoles (PS4, XBOXONE) everything will be much more realistic and more enjoyable knowing the fact that it will not be easy to score loads of goals in one match, all your play has to now be more technical.

FIFA’s Distribution methods are very strategic, and all the methods they use are all linked together to make as much money as revenue as possible. FIFA are very smart with all the moves they make. They have also been sponsored by Adidas, Coca cola, Emirates, Visa and hundreds of big and small brands. Adidas being their longest running brand will be contributing a massive amount of money in ‘sponsorship revenue’. TV Channels also pay enormous amounts of money to beat of competition from rival games, channels etc. (Pro Evolution Soccer). FIFA also has many broadcasters which they pay to advertise their product on TV Channels for more buyers. FIFA itself is a worldwide game so with it being that, it’s sold in every single gaming store, (GAME, CEX Exchange, Games4u) it’s even sold in stores such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s which are not even gaming stores, which shows FIFA’s significance.

FIFA’s Ultimate team is known to make most of the money they own due to being able to buy FIFA points for real money, this enables you to buy as many packs as you want with more of a chance to get better players which go for the most coins in the game. EA first began to notice this when they were a huge success making 200 million dollars in EA’s 2013 fiscal year.

FIFA’s audience is any age from 3 on upwards, FIFA have made this game so realistic throughout the years that the people of older age do not even realise that it’s a game until they see the controller in your hand with your eyes plugged into the TV. Personally I think that mostly people in secondary school or university play the game most, but some people have such an interest in it that they make a YouTube account and just play FIFA and record themselves playing it as a job and actually get played for the amount of views and subscribers they have. One of the most payed youtubers and most recognised in the world for playing FIFA and taking it to an extreme level is KSI, alongside with his younger brother Deji (ComedyShortsGamer). But there’s a lot of other adults and teenagers who get inspired by the KSI etc. and do the same thing. Personally I think that FIFA is the best football game ever made, beating Pro Evolution Soccer by miles. FIFA’s audience also goes down to the fans of real life football who are passionate about their preferred team, and they want a chance to experience what the real players feel on the pitch, which is also why FIFA’s so known, because there are millions of football supporters and watchers

TV has made massive changed in the last few years, but the progress it’s made since it was created, has really been amazing, to think that TV’s changed from cable, which are channels 1-5, and all the way 500+ channels.

There were many people in the early 20^th century who invented TV. There were many competitions in which individuals and corporations competed in in various parts of the world to deliver a device that superseded previous technology. Even though some didn’t win, their ideas were still good enough to capitalize on and make profit. TV is never going to stay the same, there will always be changes to it, in the space of 20 years, there has been Mechanical televise, electronic television, colour television, digital television, smart television, 3D Television etc. To this day, things such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer are the most used site to watch and catch up on programmes that you missed when you couldn’t catch the first airing. The way Americans watch movies has changed dramatically in the last few years because of the man who thought up, and started up a company called Netflix. Now more and more of us rent movies by mail. Reed Hastings is the co-founder of Netflix, Netflix was the website which took over LOVEFiLM and Block busters.

Radio

With the invention of the radio, lots of people had their part in helping create the radio, one person can’t really take all the credit for the full invention of the radio. The whole concept of the radio is for it to be wireless telegraphy. James Clerk Maxwell showed in theoretical and mathematical form in 1864 that electromagnetic waves could propagate through free space. Hertzian waves were what the radio need for it to initially work. The name Hertzian waves came from Heinrich Rudolf Hertz publishing the results of his experiments where he was able to transmit electromagnetic waves (radio waves) through the air, proving Maxwell's electromagnetic theory.

Most of the best improvements of radio were made in the late 20^th century, this is a list of the changes that were made to the radio in that time period.

• 1954: Regency introduced a pocket transistor radio, the TR-1, powered by a "standard 22.5V Battery".
• 1960: Sony introduced their first transistorized radio, small enough to fit in a vest pocket, and able to be powered by a small battery. It was durable, because there were no tubes to burn out. Over the next twenty years, transistors displaced tubes almost completely except for very high power, or very high frequency, uses.
• Early 1960s: VOR systems finally became widespread; before that, aircraft used commercial AM radio stations for navigation. (AM stations are still marked on U.S. aviation charts).
• 1963: Color television was commercially transmitted, and the first (radio) communication satellite, TELSTAR, was launched. In the late 1960s, the U.S. long-distance telephone network began to convert to a digital network, employing digital radios for many of its links.
• 1970s: LORAN became the premier radio navigation system. Soon, the U.S. Navy experimented with satellite navigation.
• 1987: The GPS constellation of satellites was launched.
• Early 1990s: Amateur radio experimenters began to use personal computers with audio cards to process radio signals.
• 1994: The U.S. Army and DARPA launched an aggressive successful project to construct a software radio that could become a different radio on the fly by changing software.
• Late 1990s: The digital transmissions began to be applied to broadcasting.

Film

The history of film all began in the 1890s. The image beside this text is a Cinématographe Lumière, one of the first types of cameras to be able to record films, any film that it captured would only be black and white.

Early movie cameras were fastened to the head of their tripod with only simple levelling devices provided. These cameras were thus effectively fixed during the course of the shot, and hence the first camera movements were the result of mounting a camera on a moving vehicle. The Lumière brothers shot a scene from the back of a train in 1896.
